In what shouldn’t come as too much as a surprise for those who are familiar with their unconventional ways, Sydney’s Richard Cuthbert and Brisbane’s Edward Guglielmino have collected their combined creative powers to release a double a-side cassingle and are heading out on a co-headline tour to support.
It’s no secret that Cuthbert and Guglielmino are certainly two of Australia’s most idiosyncratic and persistent musicians, consistently touring, releasing and performing their unique compositions. Richard recalls meeting Edward at an open mic night in a rundown Berlin bar and, as Edward was a fan of Richard’s well-known indie band Cuthbert and the Night Walkers, the two hit it off immediately.
“I had heard of Ed, through a few Brisbane musicians, there were a number of stories about him being sued or being arrested, I’d never listened to his music and I was surprised by how gentile it was, I expected something a bit more raucous considering the stories I’d been told” – Richard Cuthbert
Since this crossing of paths as expatriates, these two performers have been scheming over email; working on an idea about touring a double a-side.
“I recounted hearing Richie’s first release on Triple J and then ordering it from Rocking Horse Records. We thought we should try and replicate that 'anticipation' for a song. This experience will be nostalgic for some - for others it might even be the first time they experience a wait time around hearing a tune, and I am sure that others will just find this frustrating. However I think it is important for people the same age as my sister [20] to experience waiting to hear a song. For many this may seem a bit abstract, but I think most music fans can recall, the joy of hearing a song after waiting for it” – Edward Guglielmino
What we were saying before about idiosyncratic? Cuthbert and Guglielmino are releasing a cassette only single (with a download code). Throughout the entire tour, the only way to access these songs is to order a cassette online or purchase one at a show (or hear the songs on radio).
Two of the most frustrated Cuthbert and Guglielmino fans are no doubt their management firms:
“I literally had to beg Richard to include download codes with these…. cassette tapes” – Josef Muller (Nathan Farrell Management).
“Possibly one of the best songs Ed has written in the six years that I have managed him and he's decided to release it on a ….cassette” – Ben Preece (Mucho Bravado).
